Belgium overview

Belgium has some of Europe's best preserved medieval cities with gorgeous architecture, sprawling restaurants on central squares and Gothic detailing throughout. A fantastic place for a city break or a through-way on your European travels, Belgium has asserted itself as a mini-European capital with almost every legislative body being based there alongside NATO and other major international organisations. If visiting just one city, Bruges or Ghent would be our pick but Belgium is particularly well designed for a very lazy tour of the country - all the main cities are stretched out in a direct line and connected by good and cheap rail links making city hopping as easy as chips or perhaps Moules frites.

Places in Belgium

    • Restaurant in Markt square

Bruges is one of the best architectural examples of Europe's medieval past. Spared the fate of most other old cities during the wars, its charm is undeniable.

    • Grote Markt square

Belgium’s capital is often overlooked by tourists in favour of Bruges and Ghent nearby, but this beautiful medieval city epitomises the region’s mix of a rich historical past with the present.
