While both the Evansville and Mammoth Cave routes from Louisville to Nashville are full of incredible highlights, both are quite different.

The Evansville Route takes you through enchanting pine tree forests and gentle hills, small towns, and bourbon distilleries. Starting from Louisville, a slight detour brings you to the unique town of Santa Claus and its Christmas Lake.

Driving from Louisville to Evansville, you'll see stunning landscapes and postcard-worthy views across the Ohio River and the Forest of the Lakes. However, this route involves more driving time.

In contrast, the Mammoth Cave Route is equally rich in natural beauty. You'll drive through striking pine forests and landmarks like Fort Knox and The Abraham Lincoln Birthplace Historic Park.

Mammoth Cave, a highlight of this route, has museums and plenty of adventurous hikes in and around the famous cave. From there, you'll drive through a series of small towns and rural communities, culminating near the bustling outskirts of Nashville.

This route, while offering less urban scenery, is perfect if you love nature and experiencing life in rural Kentucky.

How to drive from Louisville to Nashville

Evansville Route

Starting from Louisville, you'll head west on Interstate 64 (I-64) towards Evansville, Indiana. If you can, take a detour to the charming Santa Claus Museum and Village, where Christmas cheer persists year-round.

Continuing west, venture into Evansville, a city rich in history and nature. Here, explore the Angel Mounds State Historic Site for a glimpse into ancient Native American life, the tranquil Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve, and the beautifully preserved Reitz Home Museum.

As you leave Evansville, follow I-69 South to Madisonville, Kentucky. In Madisonville, visit the Adsmore Museum to learn about early 20th-century life in the region. Then, drive west on I-69 to the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area.

After the Land Between the Lakes, head southeast towards Nashville. On this stretch, attractions like the Dunbar Cave State Park in Tennessee offer a refreshing break amidst nature before you reach your destination in Nashville.

Mammoth Cave Route

Start from Louisville by traveling south on Interstate I-65. Your first destination is Bardstown, Kentucky, known for its bourbon heritage. A slight detour west will bring you to the Jim Beam American Stillhouse, another iconic stop for bourbon enthusiasts.

Continue west to Elizabethtown, where you can explore Swope's Cars of Yesteryear Museum for a nostalgic journey through automotive history. A short detour north takes you to the General George Patton Museum at Fort Knox.

Your next stop is Horse Cave, just off I-65 South. Nearby, in the town of Cave City, you can visit Dinosaur World. The highlight of this route is Mammoth Cave National Park. Here, you'll get extensive cave tours and wonderful hiking opportunities.
