If you're looking to escape the hustle and bustle atmosphere of Dubrovnik for a day, you can find solace in Lokrum Island, just 600m off the coast. This wild oasis in the Adriatic Sea is a paradise for nature lovers and outdoorsy types, with ample swimming, diving and picnicking opportunities. There are also wild rabbits and peacocks roaming the island, as well as a botanical garden you can explore.
Lokrum is just 1.5 miles long, but there's plenty to do here, from floating in the 'Dead Sea' (a shallow salt lake near the centre of the island) to visiting the ruins of an old Benedictine Monastery, which dates back to around 1023. Game of Thrones fans will also want to catch a glimpse of the iconic Iron Throne from the TV show, which is located on the island!
In the high season, ferries run from Dubrovnik's old port Porporela to Lokrum every 30 minutes, and the journey takes about 15 minutes in total. A return ticket costs 150 Kuna (about €20) and includes entry into the Nature Reserve. Children aged 5 to 15 can board the ferry for 25 Kuna. The last ferry back to the city is at 7pm.
