The northernmost of the three Baltic states, Estonia sits just across the Gulf of Finland from Helsinki occupying a historically important strategic spot controlling much of the Baltic Sea's movement. As a result, ownership of the land has always been seen as important to various conquering hordes with centuries of influence shared between different European groups. Teutonic Knights left one of the most lasting impressions on the country that building beautiful city centers with narrow streets and a distinct northern European feel although Viking and Russian influences are also very noticeable. Due to its location, Estonia is a great inclusion on driving tours of northern Europe - combine it with Latvia and Lithuania on trips around the North Sea, take the ferry to travel to Scandinavia or cross the border east towards St Petersburg if you're brave enough to delve into Russia.
