Musée des Civilisations de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée

France > Marseille

The eye-catching Musée des Civilisations de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée (Mucem) was inaugurated in June 2013, the same year that Marseille was designated as the European Capital of Culture. Designed by architects Rudy Ricciotti and Roland Carta, the museum is a sleek cube-shaped structure surrounded by latticework concrete that looks almost like lace. Its ultra-modern appearance makes for a striking juxtaposition against the traditional buildings of the old port, where it's located.

Inside the museum, you'll find permanent and rotating exhibitions dedicated to the cultural habits and traditions of European and Mediterranean civilisations throughout history. A steel bridge connecting the modern building with the old Fort Saint-Jean, which is also an exhibition space, makes the MUCEM a fun place to explore.
