With much of the city severely damaged during the Second World War and the subsequent neglect under Soviet occupation, it is astounding how far Riga has come in such a short time since Latvia has gained its independence. The Old Town's reconstruction has quickly elevated Riga to become an elegant and sophisticated city and with much of the work concentrating on restoring its traditional look, Riga can rival many top European cities for tourism.

The scars left in Riga from the past are still evident on every street and the large lego-shaped Occupation Museum is a stark reminder of Riga's 20th century demise. Don't let this stop you from coming however, as Latvia's capital is perfect for a weekend break and is still relatively cheap yet to be discovered by mainstream tourism.
