Officially known as the Principality of Liechtenstein, this 160-square-kilometre European microstate has a population of around 37,000, roughly the same as the tiny town of Hatfield in Hertfordshire, England.
But don’t let its meagre size fool you; this German-speaking sovereign state sandwiched between Switzerland and Austria is positively filled with enchanting scenery and fairy tale-esque towns. Vaduz Castle and Gutenberg Castle are historical landmarks worth viewing, while the strikingly modern Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein has an impressive collection of classical and contemporary art on show.
If you’re a fan of the outdoors, take to the hiking trails on the snow-capped mountains, hit the slopes in Malbun ski resort, or ride your bike along the 100km of cycle paths hugging the banks of the Rhine River. Liechtenstein is just an hour-long train journey from Zurich, and it’s ready to be discovered.
