Kazan, situated on the Volga river in southwest Russia, is the capital of the Tatarstan Republic, a semi-autonomous region. As such, it boasts a unique multicultural feel that separates it from other Russian cities.
The overwhelming feel in Kazan is one of peaceful harmony. Tatar is the official language here, and all signs in the city are written in both Tatar and Russian. The population here is almost half Muslim and half Russian Orthodox, as well as several other religions, all living in peace together.
With its clean, safe feel and numerous attractions, Kazan is super tourist-friendly. And in recent years, it’s become something of a sports capital of the country, with numerous world-class sports venues dotted across the city.
