Volgograd, formerly known as Stalingrad, is a historic city situated in southwest Russia on the banks of the Volga river.

Volgograd's claim to fame is being the location of the Battle of Stalingrad, one of the most important battles of World War II. It was here in 1943 that the Germans were finally halted and forced to turn back for good.

These days, Volgograd is an important cultural and economic centre of Russia, with numerous attractions that include museums, historical monuments and picturesque canals and parks.
