For a deeper understanding of the devastation caused at the Battle of Stalingrad, it’s worth visiting the State Panoramic Museum.
The main attraction in this gargantuan site is a giant panoramic painting depicting the battle. Painted by several artists, this is work - which measures an impressive 16 x 200 metres - is truly immersive.
The museum itself features exhibits of uniforms, weapons and vehicles used during the battle, as well as photographs of the heroes who fought in it.
Just outside the museum building you’ll see another gruesome reminder of the battle: the ruins of a mill almost destroyed in the fighting. The ruins were left untouched as a monument to the courage of the soldiers who fought in this infamous battle.
Most of the information at the State Panoramic Museum is in Russian, but English audio guides are also available.
