The Royal Mile is a series of connected streets in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town. The length of this area is one Scots mile which gives it the historic name. Some of the streets that form part of this area are the Castle Esplanade, Castlehill, Lawnmarket and the High Street.
The streets that form part of the Royal Mile are the busiest in the city alongside Princes Street which runs in parallel. The area boasts a very diverse range of shops, restaurants, pubs and various museums & monuments which make it a must see on your way around Edinburgh. Note the Heart of Midlothian just outside the St Giles High Kirk. This small, but very important landmark is a stone mosaic representing the spot on which housed the Old Tolbooth - the city's focal point, local seat of government and prison all in one.
