Originally called Plaza de Arrabel, the Plaza Mayor was supposed to be built under the reign of Philip II. However construction didn't begin until 1617, under the reign of Philip III.
Formerly used for public executions, royal family events, festivals, and even football games, Plaza Mayor oozes history and culture. Make this a stop before you explore the city of Madrid. Both locals and tourists frequent its many cafes and boutiques, and you won't be disappointed!
