Tenerife, the largest of Spain's Canary Islands, is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe - and for good reason. With its dramatic landscapes, lively festivals and 269km of shoreline, this island off the coast of West Africa is something of a paradise.

Reasons to visit Tenerife

Thanks to its location and climate, Tenerife benefits from pleasantly mild temperatures all year round. It also averages 300 days of sunshine per year, making it the perfect winter getaway.

If you're a wildlife lover, you'll be thrilled to know that Tenerife is home to almost 30 species of whale and dolphin. Boat tours departing from Los Gigantes and Los Cristianos can give you an up-close viewing.

Indeed, there's no shortage of outdoor activities to enjoy in Tenerife, from sunbathing on one of its many beaches to hiking the Masca Trail and doing some stargazing at night. The island's volcanic mountains (including Mount Teide, the tallest peak in Spain), are also worth exploring, on foot or by cable car.

Carnaval de Santa Cruz

The exuberant celebration that takes over Tenerife in the week leading up to Lent attracts visitors from all over the world.

If your trip to Tenerife happens to coincide with the Carnival, you can expect to see colourful parades featuring costumes, music, dancing and food.
