A hip seaport on the southwest coast of Sweden, Gothenburg (Göteborg to the Swedes) is an underrated city that you should definitely add to your travel bucket list. It's got myriad trendy shops and restaurants, charming 17th-century canals, and an alluring laid-back feel. Plus, direct flights from the UK make it easy to visit Gothenburg for a weekend break.

Things to see in Gothenburg

Gothenburg is a city of canals, so they best way to experience it is by boat. The Paddan Tour takes you past important landmarks with a guide who will teach you about the city's culture and history. Tall travellers, take note: the tour takes you under a couple of low bridges, so watch your head!

There are loads of interesting museums in the city, from the Museum of Art to the Universeum, an interactive science centre with a rainforest section. You can also spend some downtime in one of the city's many green spaces, like Slottskogen Park and the botanical garden.

If you're travelling with family, don't forget to check out Liseberg, an amusement park complete with roller coaster rides and arcade halls.

Coffee culture

For the Swedes, coffee holds such a special place in their hearts that they traditionally take a 'Fika' (coffee break) twice daily. This special time is when friends gather to catch up while getting a dose of caffeine. Try exploring the old neighbourhood of Haga to find a cafe, and don't forget to sample a giant kanelbullar (cinnamon roll), Gothenburg's favourite sweet treat.
