Cross-country road trips from Las Vegas
There is a massive difference between a 4-hour weekend run to Zion and packing up the car for a 1,500-mile journey across the country. Vegas sits at one of the most isolated points in the United States - surrounded by desert in every direction with serious distance to anywhere east or north of the Southwest.
Whether you're moving to the Pacific Northwest, driving back to the East Coast, or you genuinely want to make the cross-country drive itself the trip, leaving Vegas presents specific challenges most road trip guides ignore. You're not just dealing with the Mojave - you're dealing with multiple full days behind the wheel, mountain passes that close in winter, and stretches of highway where the next gas station is 80 miles away.

- The Mojave Is Your First Test: Every direction out of Vegas crosses serious desert before you reach anything else. In summer, that desert is the most dangerous part of any cross-country drive - 110°F+ temperatures break cars that would handle the rest of the journey fine. Leave Vegas early in the morning in summer to clear the desert before the worst of the heat. Winter is dramatically easier in the Mojave but adds risk in the mountain passes further along.
- The 2-Driver Rule: Don't try to hero a 19-hour Seattle drive or a 40-hour Miami drive solo. Plan for at least a couple overnight stops - I have listed the best places to rest for each route below. A road trip is infinitely better with friends and family, so plan to split the driving between you.
- Vehicle Prep Is Non-Negotiable: A breakdown on a Sunday in rural Nevada or Utah means you're stuck until at least Monday. Check your spare, top off all fluids, and carry extra water - especially on the southern and eastern routes through Death Valley-adjacent terrain. Vegas summer + cross-country distance is harder on cars than most rental drivers realize.
