While both the Direct Route and the Moab Detour from Jackson Hole to Las Vegas are full of things to see and do, they each have their own charms. Which one you choose will mainly depend on how much time you have for scenic detours.

How to drive from Jackson Hole to Las Vegas

Direct Route

Start the Direct Route from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, by heading southwest to Idaho. From here, continue into Utah, through the awe-inspiring Big Cottonwood Canyon. Arriving in Salt Lake City, take some time to explore its urban charm, visit the Utah State Capitol, and see the historic Salt Lake Temple.

As you drive further south on Interstate 15 (I-15) from Salt Lake City, the expansive Utah Lake near Provo is the best place to take pictures. Driving through Provo, the route takes you to Fillmore, and then into the heart of Fishlake National Forest near Richfield and Beaver.

After driving further south, you will find yourself in Cedar City, a gateway to stunning national parks. A must-visit is Zion National Park, known for its towering red cliffs and scenic drives.

Afterwards, drive to St George. Then, continue on I-15 through the beautiful small town of Mesquite in Nevada, before reaching Moapa Valley. The final stretch of your journey takes you into the buzzing energy of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Moab Detour

You will follow the same directions as the Direct Route until you reach Provo, where the routes diverge.

Continue your journey by veering southeast to the world-renowned Arches National Park near Moab. This park is famous for its stunning natural arches and unique rock formations, a dream destination for nature enthusiasts.

Next, you can also visit Canyonlands National Park. Then, drive southwest on UT-24 to Capitol Reef National Park. This less-traveled park offers a tranquil experience with its captivating canyons and fruit orchards.

From here, drive through the picturesque Dixie National Forest, which leads you to the vicinity of Bryce Canyon City. After soaking in the beauty of Bryce Canyon, the journey continues towards Mount Carmel, Utah, and then to the majestic Zion National Park.

After Zion National Park, you'll merge back onto I-15 and enter the beautiful town of St George and follow the same directions as the Direct Route to reach Las Vegas.

Best time to go on a road trip from Jackson Hole to Las Vegas

Las Vegas is a city that has endless fun and excitement year-round. However, the best season to travel from Jackson Hole depends on what adventures and events you want to experience.

In the winter, Las Vegas temperatures typically hover around 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, making it a pleasant time to hit the strip. However, if you're traveling on either the Direct Route or the Moab Detour during this season, be aware that high elevations in the American Rockies can bring plenty of snow and icy weather.

Destinations like Zion National Park are enchanting with snowy landscapes but national parks on either route might have closures due to weather conditions, so it is always a good idea to check before you travel.

There are also plenty of events to enjoy in winter. On the Direct Route, you could time your trip to coincide with the Sundance Film Festival in January or the Utah Arts Festival in February.

During summer, Las Vegas sizzles with temperatures often soaring above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, perfect if you enjoy the heat. But if you prefer milder weather, spring and fall are ideal times to visit.

Spring in Las Vegas sees temperatures in a comfortable range of 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Along both routes, you'll get to enjoy the majestic spring wildflower blooms and perfect weather for hiking.

Fall in Las Vegas is particularly pleasant, with temperatures ranging from the high 60s to the 80s. For hikers, the fall is perfect with cooler temperatures and some fall foliage in the mountains.

This season hosts the popular Life is Beautiful Festival in September and the traditional Las Vegas Helldorado Days in November. The Moab Detour offers the Moab Music Festival in September and the Jubilee of Trees in November, both unique cultural experiences not to be missed.
